After 30 years located in the Lorden Plaza in Milford, Toadstool Bookshop has moved to the Somerset Plaza in Nashua.

Owner Willard Williams said the Milford location’s lease was up and it came down to signing a new agreement or looking for a new storefront.

Williams said the plaza was not as busy as he hoped it would be in recent years and with a large inventory, the store needed a certain level of sales necessary to make the business viable.

He said there was never any discussion about closing the Milford location, which is the third opened by the Williams family, following the locations in Peterborough (1972) and Keene (1983).

“It was always staying there or moving,” Williams said.

When he realized staying was no longer the best option, Williams began to search for another place in Milford to move.

“We looked around a lot and there wasn’t really anything (in Milford) that had the space we needed and the activity we needed to keep the store profitable,” Williams said.

The Somerset Plaza, located 15 minutes away from the previous location, is a thriving area, Williams said, with a Market Basket next door and a Hobby Lobby at the other end of the building.

Having occupied a number of places in the Lorden Plaza over the last three decades, Williams struggled with moving further away from his customers to the west of Milford.

“A lot of people have said they will come down to the Nashua store,” Williams said. “Generally its been a very positive response.”

In addition to the busyness of the plaza, there are a number of restaurants in the area and no other bookstores near the new location.

The one downside to the move is that the Bookside Cafe, which opened after the store’s last move within the Lorden Plaza has been closed as the new space didn’t allow for it and there’s other options to fill that need near by.

In all it took about 10 days to move the store to Nashua, which officially opened on Oct. 21.

Williams said they extended the hours of the location to Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Somerset Plaza is located at 379 Amherst St., Nashua.
