The Monadnock Ledger-Transcript received Distinguished Newspaper honors in the Small Circulation Weekly Newspaper Division from the New England Newspaper and Press Association Sept. 21 at the NENPA/NYPA Fall Publishers’ Conference in Providence, R.I.

One of the two editions for the Ledger-Transcript’s Newspaper of the Year application was the Aug. 8, 2023, issue, which featured a 32-page special section on Jaffrey’s 250th anniversary.

“The Distinguished Newspaper honor is another testament to the quality of the work done by everyone at the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript,” editor Bill Fonda said.

“We are particularly proud of the Jaffrey 250 section after all the hard work that went into putting it together, which makes this honor even more special.”

This year, the Provincetown Independent, of Provincetown, Mass., got top honors as Newspaper of the Year in the Small Circulation Weekly Division, and the Vermont Standard of Woodstock, Vt., also received Distinguished Newspaper honors.

“I am incredibly proud of our team,” said Heather McKernan, Ledger-Transcript publisher.

“This award honors the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript as one of the top three community newspapers in New England. It’s an accomplishment, and rewarding to be recognized.”

The Monadnock Ledger-Transcript is part of a local family owned company, Newspapers of New England, with publications serving readers in New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Vermont. Other Newspapers of New England honorees were The Daily Hampshire Gazette and Sunday Concord Monitor, which both won Newspaper of the Year in their respective categories. The Greenfield Recorder and Valley Advocate also earned Distinguished Newspaper honors. Monitor reporter Sruthi Gopalakrishnan won a Publick Occurrences award for her “Planning the End” series.

Earlier this year, the Ledger-Transcript took second place in Class II for general excellence at the New Hampshire Press Association awards.

In addition, reporter Ashley Saari received third place in the Sports Writing and Spot News Photo categories, and reporter Jesseca Timmons received second place for Column Writing for her “Greenfield Beat” column.
