A 78-year-old Massachusetts man died on Mount Monadnock Monday morning after suffering a medical emergency while hiking just below the summit.
Fish and Game Conservation officers responded around 9:31 a.m. to a 911 call for a 78-year-old man suffering a medical emergency while hiking the White Cross Trail at Monadnock State Park in Jaffrey, Fish and Game said in a press release Monday.
The hiker and his two companions were hiking just below the summit of Mount Monadnock when he became unresponsive at 9:14 a.m.
The hiker’s companions and good Samaritans attempted CPR for over one hour before paramedics from the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team helicopter arrived on scene.
DHART medics hiked from a landing zone near the summit down to the hiker.
Life-saving efforts were terminated at 10:35 a.m. The hiker’s body was flown to the Monadnock Christian Ministries soccer field located on Dublin Road where he was then transported toCournoyer’s Funeral Home in Jaffrey.
The initial investigation conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner indicates the hiker died of natural causes.
The man’s name is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
Multiple agencies including the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, the Jaffrey Fire Department, the Peterborough Fire Department, the Dublin Fire Department, the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Advanced Response Team and the Jaffrey-Rindge Memorial Ambulance responded to Monadnock State Park.
