The town of New Ipswich is seeking a new member for the Select Board following John Veeser’s resignation, which was announced at Tuesday night’s meeting.

The new member would fill the vacancy until next March, when the position would be open for town-wide election.

Chairman Jason Somero put forth Bernard Hamill as a candidate to temporarily sit on the Select Board, citing his previous experience as a Selectman and Planning Board chairman.

“Bert is my first choice,” Somero said. “I think he’d be a great asset to us.”

Hamill is interested in filling the position, and spoke about his credentials at the meeting, including his MBA and his experience as a civil engineer.

“As a Selectman, it’s always a learning process and you can always learn something more,” Hamill said.

Shawn Talbot expressed that he would prefer to open up the process to a larger field of candidates before making a decision about who should fill the vacant seat.

“I just would like to have more than one person to decide from if possible,” said Talbot.

After a discussion about how long that process might take, the remaining members of the Select Board agreed to revisit the issue at the next meeting and try to fill the vacancy from a wider field of potential candidates.

Also at the meeting, the Selectmen signed the finalized renewal to the town’s cable franchise agreement with Comcast. The renewal is for a period of ten years.

The renewal includes an increase in the town’s franchise fee from 2% to 3%, and the addition of a high-definition public access channel in addition to the current standard-definition channel. The lengthening of the agreement is intended to allow for the cost of the high-definition channel to be absorbed over a longer period of time.
