The New Ipswich Historical Society, 23 Main St., will hold its annual meeting Thursday, Sept. 29, at 6:30 p.m.

A brief business meeting will be followed by an in-person presentation on one-room schoolhouses in New Hampshire. A century ago, hundreds of one-room schools dotted the state's landscape and provided primary education for generations of children. It is thought that New Ipswich once had 13 schoolhouses, some of which are still standing, including the Historical Society building. However, problems included financing and wide disparities among taxing districts to support local education. Teacher preparation and quality, curriculum, discipline, student achievement and community involvement in the educational process were also concerns.

Stephen Taylor, a farmer, writer, reporter and longtime scholar of the state's rural history and culture, will explore the lasting legacies of the one-room school and how they echo today. New Hampshire Humanities is funding this program, which is free and open to the public.
