ConVal School Board’s newest member from Peterborough, Tom Burgess, hopes he can use his education expertise to help the district, having been a teacher for 35 years.

“I feel confident that I can be of some good use to the board in running the schools and running the ConVal system,” he said. “My experience has made me confident that I can be of use, and I want to offer that use to the school.”

Burgess is taking the seat vacated by Jerome Wilson of Peterborough, who announced his resignation from the board earlier this month due to “family responsibilities.” He wrote in his notice to the board that he felt he no longer had the time to commit to both his personal responsibilities and those of the board.

“Thank you to Jerry for his years of service to the students and communities of ConVal during his tenure,” Board Chair Tim Theberge said at the Nov. 16 meeting before welcoming Burgess to the board. Burgess was sworn in prior to the meeting.

Burgess was selected by remaining Peterborough board members Richard Dunning, Janine Lesser and Greg Kriebel. He said they asked him if he was interested in being considered, and after an interview, told him that he had been selected to fill the seat.

“It’s a very important position and I’m looking forward to it,” Burgess said.

In the short term, Burgess said he wants to focus on helping the district tackle “the continuing challenge” of COVID-19.

“Long-term, I want to help build on ConVal’s successes and help our children prepare for whatever the future holds,” he said.

He is unsure if he will run for the seat come spring. For now, he will fill out the remainder of Wilson’s term until March of 2022.
