Three men were sent to the hospital, one by helicopter, after a head-on crash on Route 101 during this morning’s commute.

At around 7:30, police responded to Route 101, on the Temple side of the Temple-Wilton line, for a report of a two-vehicle accident involving a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck and a van.

Sgt. Steven Callinan of State Police Troop B, which is investigating the accident, said that no cause had yet been determined. Temple-Wilton Police Chief Jim McTague commented upon the frequency of accidents on the Route 101 stretch during the morning and evening commutes due to sun glare.

Early investigation indicates that the driver of the pickup truck was traveling eastbound when it crossed the center line and collided head on with a panel van with two occupants traveling in the opposite direction. Both vehicles had major damage, and the Temple Fire Department responded to use the jaws of life to extricate the driver and passenger in the van.

The driver of the van was transported via helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries, according to Callinan. His passenger was transported by ambulance to a local Monadnock Community Hospital with a head injury. The driver of the truck was also transported to Southern Regional Hospital in Nashua by ambulance with serious injuries.

Route 101 was shut down for over two hours while the state police accident reconstruction team investigated the accident and the vehicles, which came to rest across both traffic lanes, were towed.
