The River Center board of directors has announced that Odette Butler will take over as executive director of The River Center, a family and community resource center in Peterborough. She succeeds Margaret Nelson, who is retiring after 15 years of leadership.

For 17 years, Butler she served as CEO of the nonprofit Breast Cancer Detection Center of Alaska. She has also worked as a care coordinator for seniors and most recently as executive director of Vermont Wilderness School, which provides outdoor education programs for children and adults. She lives in Hancock.

During her tenure, Nelson advanced The River Center’s mission to support families and individuals in the eastern Monadnock region. She led the organization to multiple designations as a Family Resource Center of Quality, most recently in 2025. In 2022, she received the New Hampshire Impact Award, recognizing her contributions as a nonprofit leader. 

Butler will officially assume leadership the week of Feb. 17. Nelson is involved in ensuring a smooth transition.

A search committee made up of current and former board members, staff and community volunteers led the process. Stakeholders, including program participants, donors and staff, provided input through a leadership survey.

“The search committee was enthusiastic about Odette’s nonprofit experience and community-focused outlook, and the board agreed that she could lead us in providing quality and intentional service to area families,” board Chair Douglas Sutherland stated. “We believe we have found the right leader to continue The River Center’s tradition of service while supporting our staff in their essential work.”
