Hundreds of people descended on downtown Peterborough and Dublin Saturday to join in the nationwide protests against racial injustice and police brutality. Protests, unrest and riots are taking place around the country following the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor.

“Stand Up for Racial Justice” was organized by the Community Conversations on Race group in Hancock in co-ordination with the Peterborough and Dublin chapters.

Saddened and angered by the proliferation of recent racist events which culminated in George Floyd’s death at the hands of the police, the Hancock group felt the need to organize a peaceful demonstration enabling people to show support for their fellow citizens with black and brown skin. It was also intended to bring members of the community together to share their grief over the treatment of black people in the United States.

Wearing face masks and standing six feet apart, individuals lined several major roads in Peterborough and Dublin. Participants brought their own signs, which spoke to their personal reasons for coming to the event.

The Hancock Community Conversations on Race group formed in October 2018 as a follow up to a talk at the library titled “Talking about Race: Staying Curious, Moving Forward, and Being Part of the Solution”. A group of about 20 people from around the area meet on the second and fourth Monday of each month at the Hancock Library to talk about the role of race in their lives, towns and the nation. More than double that amount keep connected about mutual areas of interest electronically.
