After a crash at the Peterborough Car Wash on Dec. 30, the business remains closed until mid-February owner Steve McDonough said.

The crash happened when a customer inadvertently started into the washing bay before it was ready and from McDonough was told, the driver hit the gas instead of the brakes and ran into the main frame causing the machine to tilt at a 45 degree angle, breaking off three of the five brushes and damaging the feed lines, McDonough said.

“It did extensive damage,” he said.

The machine was essentially a total loss, McDonough said, and while things are still be handled with the insurance company, it’s expected that the car wash will be up and running by mid-February.

“We were gearing up for our busy season,” McDonough said. “January, February and March is our busy season with the salt on cars so this was pretty catastrophic. But it was an accident.”

McDonough said the price tag for a new system is about $150,000 and there had been discussions about a replacement but that was at least a few years away.

“We just put some money into it to tune it up for the winter,” McDonough said.

McDonough said anyone with loyalty cards for the Peterborough Car Wash can use them at the Yellow Dog Car Wash in Milford or hold on to them for when the Peterborough location reopens.

“They’re still good. The value is still good,” he said.

McDonough said he had a banner made to alert people to the closure and potential reopening that will be going up on the car wash this week.
