The victim of a crash on Route 202 last Wednesday died due to his injuries Jan. 7, according to the Peterborough Police Department.

Stoddard resident Joseph Siok, 83, was taken by ambulance to Concord Hospital following a head-on collision with another vehicle the morning of Jan. 5. At the time, his chest injury was characterized as “serious, but not life-threatening” by Peterborough Fire Chief Ed Walker.

According to Walker, Siok was transported to Concord due to the necessity for a trauma center, which Monadnock Community Hospital does not have. This decision was made based on the nature of Siok’s injuries, which were to multiple bodily systems, said Walker.

According to Peterborough police, Siok was traveling southbound on Route 202 when he lost control of the vehicle and crossed the center line, colliding with another vehicle driven by Stephen Smith, 42, of Peterborough. Smith sustained minor hand injuries. Both vehicles had significant damage and had to be towed.

The crash was caused by poor road conditions that morning, when freezing rain turned many roads icy.
