At noon on Friday, the Peterborough Town Library hosted an early New Year’s Eve ball drop.

Golden streamers hung from the doorway leading into the 1833 Room, named for the year the library was established. Inside, music was playing and lights were flashing on the walls. Colors bounced around on a projector.

There were a lot of party-hat wearing children dancing, crafting, eating snacks and drinking apple juice. Parents chatted around the room.

Everyone counted down to noon and cheered to the new year.

Youth librarians Aimee LaRue and Lisa Bearce organized the event.

“We’ve had other big parties,” LaRue said. “This is our first New Years Eve party. I think the turnout has been great.”

Bearce agreed.

“It’s been a great celebration,” she said. “Aimee is our best party planner.”

The library posted about the event on social media and created handouts at the front desk. LaRue said even some people from outside the region showed up.

LaRue hopes to make this an annual event and thinks it’s a great way to bring people together in the library and put on a fun party that’s not just about books. She explained that the event offers other forms of literacy, such as reading the instructions on the crafting tables and teaching children how to create their own party hats and pompom popper.

“It’s so much fun, especially for kids. And I think adults enjoy it too,” LaRue said.

Bearce added, “This is a great room to have events in.”
