(Editor’s note: Peterborough Police Chief Scott Guinard issued this statement in response to the citizen group calling for police reform.)

The Peterborough Police Department adamantly condemns the actions of former Minneapolis officer Derek Chauvin and the inactions of the other on-scene officers at the time of Mr. Floyd’s death. The actions of those officers are unconscionable and disturbing. The Peterborough Police Department’s thoughts and prayers are with Mr. Floyd, his family, and friends.

The actions of these Minneapolis officers break the public faith and trust that all police officers have with their communities. Their actions and inactions are in sharp contrast with the culture and values of the Peterborough Police Department. The actions that led to the death of George Floyd are reprehensible and should shock the conscience of every police officer.

Please know that the members of the Peterborough Police Department strive to provide quality professional police services, protecting the rights of all residents and visitors of this community.

Sincerely,

Scott M. Guinard

Peterborough Chief of Police
