Peterborough Unitarian Universalist Congregation (PUUC) will hold an Imbolc event Friday, Feb. 3, at 6 p.m. in the Parish Hall of the Unitarian Universalist meeting house on Main Street.

Imbolc is a Celtic festival which celebrates what spring will bring while spiritually connecting with nature. Imbolc means “in the belly,” and in Gaelic, a similar word, Oimelc, means “ewe’s milk.” The spring lambing season begins at about this time so the ewes are starting to lactate “in their bellies.” Astronomically, it is the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinoxand is one of the four cross-quarter days marking the midpoints between solstices and equinoxes.  Although the date varies slightly, Feb. 3 is the exact halfway point for Imbolc this year.

This celebration honors one of Unitarian Universalism’s seven principles, “Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.”

The event is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served. The Parish Hall is on the second floor in the rear of the meeting house, through the accessible rear entrance at 25 Main St. in Peterborough.
