Why get up early all summer long and dive into freezing cold water? For members of the Peterborough Wave Swim Club, the answer’s simple.

“We’re a family. ” said Wave swimmer Leah Danforth at Saturday’s three-team meet between the Wave, the Jaffrey-Rindge Marlins and the Lakes Region Wavemakers.

Danforth, 19, has been swimming for the Wave for about six years; as a current collegiate swimmer at Simmons College, she’s an invaluable asset to the Wave as an experienced leader for the younger swimmers.

“It’s fun to see everyone else grow and to be one of the older ones now,” Danforth said. “It’s pretty cool.”

This is Danforth’s last summer swimming for the Wave (the cutoff age is 19) and she’s trying to make the most of it. On Saturday, she won her age group in the 100 and 200 Free, took second in the 100 Fly and swam on two winning relay teams.

Jaffrey-Rindge’s Emma Veilleux is making waves of her own this summer. Fresh off a pair of meet records at the Milford Rotary meet last weekend, Veilleux. 13, won all three of her individual events and two relays on Saturday against competition that included some of Conant’s top male swimmers.

Veilleux won the 200 Free, the 100 Fly and the 100 Breast on Saturday and swam the first leg of the winning 200 Medley and 200 Free relay teams. She was the youngest competitor in both the 100 Fly and 100 Breast and beat all comers, topping Conant’s Scott LaBrecque by fractions of a second as the two went head-to-head down the stretch of their breaststroke heat.

Veilleux said she’s been practicing extra hard this summer to be able to hit her swimming goals.

“I really love swimming, and I just really want to be good at it,” Veilleux said. “I want to swim in college, and I also want to try and make Nationals. I think the Olympics is a little far out there, but Nationals would be good.”

Veilleux’s winning 100 Breaststroke time of 1:17.41 would have put her 11th overall in the Division II girls’ state championship last winter.
