Peterborough Town Library, 2 Concord St. in Peterborough, will host a screening of The Divided Brain, a documentary inspired by the book The Master and his Emissary: the Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World, by Iain McGilchrist, Saturday. Jan. 28, at 1 p.m.

The documentary explores the work of Scottish philosopher and neuroscientist Ian McGilchrist and his argument that the right and left hemispheres of the brain actually amount to two different brains.

Science has long known that the human brain has a left and right hemisphere, and the conventional wisdom has been that the left hemisphere is the seat of logic, language and advanced cognition — the things humans need to function in their day-to-day lives. The right hemisphere, meanwhile, is thought to be the area of the brain where creativity, art, and intuition reside.

However McGilchrist argues that the right and left brains perform the same basic functions, but in very different ways. How people interpret and experience the world depends on whether those two brains are working in balance, or whether one is dominant or damaged. That, in turn, shapes the world people live in.

The screening will be followed by a discussion about the theory and its implications in the world today, led by library patron Graham Ward. Ward attended Laval, Acadia and Harvard universities, earning a BA and a STB degree. A vocation as teaching minister in churches in Canada and the United States was followed by an appointment by St. Anselm College as adjunct professor in the humanities.

All are welcome to attend. Registration is encouraged but not required.
