New Ipswich Librarian Anne Soini pulls out box after box, filled with children’s books.

“I haven’t counted, but there must be hundreds,” she says, as she begins to lay them out on a table in the back room of the library.

The books came from a donation made by Our Redeemer Lutheran Church preschool, after they went through their bookshelves and pared down their collection. But these books aren’t destined to be put up on the library shelves – Our Redeemer and the library hope to get them into the hands of children who might need them.

“They’re absolutely free for anyone that wants them,” said Soini. “No strings attached.”

Anyone who would like to pick up some books for preschool and kindergarten-aged children can just come down to the library and ask.

The books cover a wide range – from classic fiction and popular series to non-fiction books about animals or the ocean.

“Some kids all they want is the non-fiction. Especially about dinosaurs,” said Soini. “Everyone loves dinosaurs.”

Reading to your children is one of the best ways to foster a continued love of reading, said Soini.

“I read to my children since the day they were born,” she said. “The earlier you start, the better they will do in school. In the summer, we have programs that encourage kids not to stop reading over the summer, so that they can do their best when they start school back up in the fall.”
