Last week, the Rindge Athletic Men’s Social Club, or RAMS, continued its annual tradition of delivering a little holiday cheer to local veterans, delivering turkeys and fixings in preparation for the Thanksgiving holiday.

RAMS started as a way to bolster local youth athletic teams and fundraise for items like new dugouts and lights for the Rindge athletic fields, but has expanded to other charitable endeavors since its founding 25 years ago. For the last 10 years, those efforts have included the “Thank a Vet” program, where they seek out veterans in town to provide a Thanksgiving meal.

RAMS donated 43 turkeys to local veterans, and an additional seven to the Rindge Food Pantry, through a collaboration of donations and Market Basket, which offered the birds at a deep discount.

“I think it’s the best part of being a RAM,” said vice president Mathew Mire, who himself is a veteran. “As much as we do for the town, this is closer to my heart than most. It’s amazing to me how much fortitude these people have, and the joy they have when receiving a turkey is spot-on. If we can give them a smile, say ‘How’s it going,’ how can you say no to that?”

Six volunteers from the club, plus Forbes Farmer of Rindge, who is not a member but volunteered this year, spent a day last week delivering the birds, plus donated fresh squash.

RAMS treasurer and veteran Karl Pruter said it’s a pleasure to make those Thanksgiving deliveries.

“I’ve done this every year, and it’s an honor to drive around and deliver the turkeys to various veterans around the town,” Pruter said.

The RAMS post a notice in the Monadnock Ledger-Transcript yearly looking for veterans who wish to access the program, and use town rolls to contact those they can, but Mire encouraged any veteran who wishes to be included next year to reach out to the club through the RAMS Facebook page.

“It’s the more, the merrier, as far as I’m concerned,” Mire said.
