As summer approaches, the Rindge Swap Shop at the transfer station will remain closed, though some outdoor alternatives may be provided as the weather continues to warm.

The Swap Shop has been closed since March of 2020, when the lockdown first began in New Hampshire, and has been closed since.

“We’re waiting for the final lifting off all restrictions in the state,” Select Board Chair Karl Pruter said of the decision on Thursday. “We’re finding there continue to be arguments, and people still have issues surrounding masks.”

While Gov. Chris Sununu has lifted the mask mandate for the state of New Hampshire, guidance still recommends the use of masks, particularly among those who have not completed the vaccination process. Currently, the state is recommending a set of universal best practices that continue to advocate for social distancing, face mask use, frequent cleaning and disinfecting, increasing ventilation when possible, and contact tracing and quarantine for infected people.

Pruter said the board has heard from multiple people requesting the return of the Swap Shop, and said he recognizes its importance as a resource for the community.

“There is a real need for it,” Pruter said. “This is tough on a lot of people.”

The Swap Shop is a narrow space, with a center table that leaves narrow walkways on either side, and isn’t suitable for social distancing, Pruter said.

“It is very cramped quarters,” Pruter said.

The board has discussed some alternatives to provide residents access to some items this summer, including utilizing a shed that stores donated furniture, or putting up a tent for outdoor browsing, but no official decisions have been made as of Wednesday.

In other transfer station news, dump stickers can now be purchased on the top level of the town offices, in the town administrator and Select Board offices, as well as online. Previously, stickers were sold through the town clerk’s office.
