The position of Town Administrator in Rindge is once again filled, after nearly five months vacant after the surprise non-renewal of former administrator Joe Byk.

On Nov. 25, Rindge signed a one-year contract with Jaffrey resident Sara Gravell, who has a background in human resources, to take up the position.

Gravell took the job which has been vacant since July, when the Select Board voted not to renew Byk’s three-year contract, in a controversial split decision.

Select Board members Roberta Oeser and Karl Pruter voted not to renew Byk’s contract, with Chair Bob Hamilton voting against the motion, saying at the time he had a “strong preference” to renew Byk’s contract.

As reasons for non-renewal, Board members cited a lack of an employee review in the three years Byk worked for the town, and that he sometimes worked from home, where the board preference would be for the Town Administrator to be present in the office.

The Rindge Town Administrator position has been a tumultuous one, with multiple people filling the position leaving abruptly within the last ten years.

In 2013, former administrator Carlotta Pini quit the position before she could be fired, in what the town considered a “forced resignation.” Her successor, Jane Pitt, also quit the position in 2016, after what she called attacks on her character made by members of the public during a meeting regarding a nonpublic committee meeting to discuss a new municipal services facility for police, fire and public works. Byk, a former Peterborough selectman, was hired to replace her.

Gravell signed onto the job with a one-year contract.
