RiverMead is standing by its COVID-19 prevention protocol as an employee tested positive last week, an isolated case, according to CEO Bill James.

RiverMead has seen one resident and “a couple employees” test positive for the virus in isolated positive tests since the start of the pandemic, but there have been no outbreaks, he said. “We’re fortunate,” he said, as compared to other assisted living organizations in the state that have seen more cases and casualties.

The employee diagnosed last week had symptoms and went to get tested per RiverMead’s protocol, James said. “We have been determined in screening, and getting employees to report to us any time they show any symptoms that could be related,” he said. “We encourage residents to do the same thing, inside or outside the health center.” When a positive test occurs, RiverMead immediately enacts the protocol they put in place months ago, and contacts the state. The employee is not currently at work and James didn’t expect they would return until it was safe for them to do so. “We have taken all the necessary steps to be sure that people are safe and protected and isolated in any situation like that,” he said.

Prevention protocol has been consistent since March, James said, with only minor tweaks as the pandemic wears on. Family and friends have been permitted to visit residents outdoors on a scheduled basis, and those visits will be giving way to indoor visits in designated spaces, James said, but he identified that as an adjustment to procedure rather than a relaxation of standards.
