After 13 years, Rousseau’s Music Store & Lesson Studio was in need of more space.

So last fall, owners Mike and Diane Rousseau added a larger showroom and three expanded teaching rooms, expanding the existing structure attached to their Jaffrey home by about 30 percent.

Thanks to the first major renovation since the store opened in 2006, the Rousseaus can display more of their inventory of instruments and musical accessories, while also providing the extra room to properly meet the needs of the 150 students taught at the store each week.

“It’s really as much as expansion on our retail as it is our teaching,” he said.

It has been a leap of faith from the very beginning for the Rousseaus. Mike had been a musician his whole life, went to Berklee College of Music in Boston and had finally put himself out there to teach lessons as a side job. When his day job came to an end, Rousseau was at a crossroads.

So he and his wife decided to take a chance that the town they had lived in for many years would support a plan they had tucked in the back of their minds for some time. Turns out that not only Jaffrey, but the surrounding communities found there was a need for not just music lessons, but also a music store.

“This was my plan A, and I didn’t have a plan B,” Rousseau said.

But the fall renovation isn’t the only expansion Rousseau’s has in the works. The concrete foundation has already been poured for another addition in 2019 that will double the current size of the store.

The plans for the next renovation are still being ironed out, but it has been clear for some time that more room was needed – even with the fall add on.

“We’ve been too small for the last eight years,” Rousseau said. “It’s still small.”

Rousseaus employs six teachers, while they also both teach, and can accommodate the needs of whatever instrument students play. They also give voice lessons in the five teaching rooms.

“We are the entrance portal for people to start, whether it’s on an adults bucket list or a kid starting out,” Rousseau said. “We started with 20 students and now we have 150 – and we hoped for 80 when we started.”

Rousseau said first-time visitors are taken aback when seeing what the store offers. And that’s just a portion of the inventory, with the rest being housed in a storage facility.

“Every week people come in here and say wow,” Rousseau said. “They had no idea we had all this stuff, but we’re really a full fledged music store.”

He said he still gets the same question quite often: Can Jaffrey really support a music store? Well, after 13 years, Rousseau believes that was answered a long time ago – but isn’t just about the town where the store resides.

“We’re a family and we have roots in the community,” Rousseau said. “We support the musical needs of the Monadnock Region, and the community support us.”
