Route 31 in Wilton is undergoing construction by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation, but the state has not contacted the town to explain the project which has reduced the road to one lane.
“The work is right near the Lyndeborough line, but I’ve heard of no communication from the state about this,” Select Board member Thomas Schutz said at Monday’s meeting. Town Administrator Nick Germain said that he also had not heard from the DOT. A red light has been installed on the rural road to allow for one-lane traffic to flow. Deputy Town Administrator Janice Pack said Wednesday that she has contacted the DOT, but “Nobody has responded or seems to know anything about it.”
Schultz pointed out the importance of the town being informed about this project, as the site is close to the town’s ambulance service.
In other news, Germain said that the interview process for a new fire chief is ongoing in light of Chief Don Nourse’s impending retirement April 1. Police Chief Eric Olesen is also retiring at the end of March.
Germain also said that the town has applied for $400,000 in BRIC grant funds for repairs of culverts on Captain Clark Highway and Isaac Frye Highway. BRIC is the Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities prorgram that supports states and local communities to reduce their hazard risk. Germain said Wednesday that flooding is a possibility given the current size of the culverts. Asked about recent developments on federal support for various initiatives, Germain said “Obviously some stuff at the federal level is going on.”
