The Peterborough Select Board unanimously approved three recommendations for traffic safety measures on Hunt Road at their Tuesday night meeting.

Police Chief Scott Guinard delivered the recommendations on behalf of the police department. Recommendations included lowering the speed limit on the road from 30 to 25 mph, prohibiting through-traffic from commercial vehicles, and creating a three-way stop at the intersection of Hunt Road and Hunt Avenue. He said the recommendations based on a recent analysis of the road’s traffic patterns and a speed study that was conducted near 75 Hunt Road. Guinard also said that vehicles making pickups and drop-offs along the road, including school buses, delivery trucks, and emergency vehicles would be exempt from the through-traffic ban.

Residents of Hunt Road recently submitted a petition urging the town to consider traffic safety improvements in advance of the Main Street bridge closure. Many residents anticipate higher volumes of traffic on their road during the closure, even though members of the Select Board stressed that Hunt Road would not be a part of a marked detour.

A number of community members attended the meeting to express their concerns about the recommendations as well as additional safety issues they felt remained unaddressed. John Lord, of Middle Hancock Road, said that the logging trucks used during timber harvests on his family’s property need periodic access to Hunt Road. That access would be prohibited under the adopted recommendations. Town Administrator Rodney Bartlett said he would look into options.

Selectman Taylor reminded attendees that many of the concerns were specific to the temporary rerouting of traffic during bridge construction. “We don’t want temporary solutions to permanent problems, or permanent solutions to temporary problems,” he said.
