Letter: Don't fear the Unknown

I am a cisgendered woman writing about HB 148 – the bill that classifies based on “biological sex” in lavatory facilities or locker rooms and in “prisons, houses of correction, juvenile detention or commitment centers, mental health hospitals or treatment centers and like facilities to which persons may be committed involuntarily.” Recently, Judge Reyes spoke on Executive Order 14183 that states “sex shall refer to an individual's immutable biological classification as either male or female.” She shared the fact that there are more than 30 variations in genetic gender composition. XX or XY are not the only options, therefore EO 14183 is based on a scientifically proven inaccuracy. The same is true of HB 148.

Then there is the assumed threat. It is statistically proven that this world is more unsafe for those who are transgender, whether in restrooms or other facilities. They are the ones harassed and assaulted. I suspect women are “uncomfortable” with the idea of transgender people because they are an unknown. I have been fortunate to know, befriend and embrace as family people who are transgender. I have listened to their stories of living with a degree of fear and caution that I will never know. We should be equally if not more concerned about their safety as we are about our own, and not just in restrooms. Jonah Wheeler stated that he “did not hear a single merit-based argument against the bill.” I am hoping various letters to the editor have provided the merit. We can still do something. Contact the Senate Judicial Committee where the bill now sits. Call Sen. Donovan Fenton. Attend the committee hearing. Let’s give these politicians the information they need to vote their conscience and not vote based on who talks the loudest
