The Sharon Arts Center may be sold in early 2022, after standing vacant for over two years.

New England College currently owns the center, and school spokeswoman Jen Robertson said it expects to close the sale in early 2022, but no other information on the buyer was available.

The property is listed by Four Seasons Sotheby’s International Realty -- formerly Petersons Real Estate -- for $875,000. It has been closed since the summer of 2019, after the New Hampshire Art Institute in Manchester, which absorbed the center in 2012, merged with NEC, and underutilized NHIA properties, including the Sharon Arts Center, were shuttered.

At the time, college spokesman Tom Horgan said, “It’s a community arts center and we’re a higher education institution. Our core mission is to serve students who are seeking degrees at undergraduate and graduate levels so running a community arts center is not in line with our core mission.”

At the time of the facility’s closing, local residents and those in the art community expressed sadness for the loss of the center, which was open as a community art institution for 73 years.

According to Sotheby’s, the sale of the building is pending. Neither the real estate agency nor the college were able to confirm who the buyer is, nor what their eventual intention for the space might be.
