The Shattuck Golf Club is expected to change ownership.

Doni Ash, owner of Lab ‘n Lager in Jaffrey and Keene, said Wednesday afternoon that he plans meet with Sterling Golf Management, the current ownership group, to close the deal at noon on Thursday.

“It’s a business where I can see myself operating into my later years,” Ash said. “I’m looking forward to having a business where my son – who’s 7 – can hang around … I can teach him the ropes and maybe pass it along one day.”

Ash said he reached out to the current ownership team about six months ago with an interest in purchasing the property.

The business venture will combine Ash’s interests in golf, restaurants and being out in nature.

“It’s all stuff I like to do,” Ash said. “And meeting new people, new customers and new golfers – it’s one of my favorite parts of the business.”

Ash said he plans to purchase new golf carts, add a fresh coat of paint to the buildings, add draft lines to the restaurant space and retool the menu, among other things.

“I plan to make it a little more user-friendly, welcoming to families and maybe even a little bit more affordable,” Ash said.

Ash said he is working on a new menu right now and that he hopes to open the kitchen for more days and more hours.

Sterling Golf Management purchased the golf club over 15 years ago, according to an email and Facebook post from The Shattuck.

“Dedicated hard work, a large investment into the course and buildings, an unmatched team of employees – we took a dream and made it a reality. I look back at all the great times our team, myself and especially our customers experienced: Charity Tournaments, Membership Events, Weddings and Banquets, Fireworks, Barbeques, and Friends,” read the post, signed by Kevin Osgood, president of Sterling Golf Management. “I know the Shattuck is in great new ownership, please keep enjoying the Legacy we built. I thank all our members, visiting golfers, function visitors and especially the staff.”

Jay Miller, director of golf course operations for Sterling Golf Management, said Wednesday that the company manages ten courses in Massachusetts, one of which is owned by Osgood.

Miller said the golf club was a “labor of love” for Osgood and that it was the first course he ever bought.

“He put a lot into the Shattuck. Being in business 26 years, it’s a bittersweet feeling,” Miller said. “He really put his heart and soul into the Shattuck.”

Osgood improved a number of things at the Shattuck, Miller said, including the reception area, the maintenance facility, irrigation pumps around the lake, clearing of trees and maintaining bridges.

Osgood has also forged great relationships with employees, Miller said.

“When he got the course, it wasn’t in the greatest condition,” Miller said. “Now it’s pretty darn plush. Kevin treats all his staff like family. His employees are loyal to him and he is to them.”

Osgood could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.

Miller said Ash will be a good fit for the Shattuck because of his experience in the food and beverage business.

“That’s his specialty,” Miller said. “I believe he will expand that part of the business nicely.”
