Smokey Bear will be celebrating his 75th birthday in Mason.

The Mason Public Library is one of six libraries across the state who will receive a personal visit from the mascot, known for educating children about fire safety and prevention of forest and wildfires.

Mason was selected out of more than 60 applicants, along with Bethlehem, Dunbarton, Gorham, Hampton Falls and Plymouth, to be a hosting library for Smokey Bear celebrations.

“We are very small, but we are mighty, and I think they realized that,” library Program Coordinator Judy Forty said Wednesday.

Smokey’s message is an important one in Mason, Forty said, because the vast majority of the town is forested.

“What better way than have Smokey spread the word?” Forty said.

On July 16, at 10:30 a.m., Smokey, accompanied by a forest ranger with the Division of Forests and Lands, will arrive at the Mason town center gazebo on a Mason Fire Truck. The ranger will share the rules for fire prevention with attending children, and children will have the opportunity to explore a forestry truck and its equipment. Children will have the opportunity to take photos with Smokey, and there will be fire safety materials available for residents to take home. There will be a coloring contest with prizes for various age groups up to age 15.

Nancy Richards, who at 95 is the oldest active member of the Mason Fire Department, running their dispatch during fire calls, will be on hand to do the honors of cutting the birthday cake.

The celebrations will be at the gazebo on Darling Hill Road in Mason from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

In case of bad weather, celebrations will be held in the Town Hall. For more information, contact the Mason Public Library.

Editor’s note: This story originally erroneously referred to Smokey Bear as Smokey the Bear.
