HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS ROUNDUP: Conant girls’ tennis pulls out win over Bishop Brady

The Conant girls’ tennis team won the final doubles match to score a 5-4 win over Bishop Brady at home Monday.

Conant had lost to Bishop Brady 7-2 at its first match of the season on April 3.

In singles, Margaret Winiecki won 8-0 in the No, 1 spot, Nobley Walker cane back from a 5-2 deficit to win 8-5 in fifth singles and Grace Lewis won 8-2 at sixth singles. 

The No. 1 doubles team of Winiecki and Kelly Williams won 8-0, and the third doubles team of Walker and Lewis won 8-3.

Williams lost 8-1 at second singles, while Jess Yap lost 8-3 at second singles and Lilly Rennie lost 8-1 at fourth singles. Yap and Rennie also lost at second doubles, 8-0.

Conant is now 4-4. Their next match is at home Friday, May 5, at 4 p.m. again Pelham.

GIRLS’ TENNISPortsmouth sweeps ConVal

The ConVal girls tennis team traveled to Portsmouth Monday, where they lost 9-0.

Makenna Proctor turned in the best singles performance for the Cougars, losing 8-3 in second singles. Proctor and partner Christine Broderick also took two games in their match at first doubles. In first singles, Broderick lost 8-1.

SOFTBALLConVal scores road win at H-B

The ConVal softball team traveled to Hollis-Brookline Monday, earning a 6-2 win over the hosts to win their fourth straight game and move to 4-3 on the season.

Hollis jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, but the Cougars took the lead in the third. Avery Moore reached on an error by the first baseman, Samantha Henderson reached on a single and they both advanced on a passed ball. With two outs, Lily Mandel was intentionally walked, and on the first pitch of her at-bat, Ashley Cronin hit a grand slam.

Hollis-Brookline scored another run in the fourth, but Morgan Bemont scored in the fifth and seventh innings to provide the final margin. Bemont reached with a single in the fifth, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Olivia Riley and scored on an H-B overthrow. In the seventh, Bemont hit a triple to right field and Riley plated her with a ground ball to the right side.

Bemont led the Cougars’ offense with a single, triple, and two runs scored, and Ashley Cronin went 3-3 with two singles and the grand slam. 

Mandel was on the mound, throwing Moore. In seven innings, she gave up two runs on 10 hits and one walk, striking out four and walking one.

The Cougars were scheduled to host Souhegan Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. 

TRACK AND FIELDConVal athletes compete at Black Bear

Several members of ConVal’s track and field teams participated in the Black Bear Invitational at Coe-Brown Northwood Academy April 29.

The boys’ team finished 27th of 33 teams with 3.5 points. Sophomore Kendrick Edwards’ fifth-place finish in the 100-meter dash, in a time of 11.58 seconds, earned two points. His long jump distance of 19-feet, 9 1/2-inches was good for sixth place and one point. Junior Jack Harris pole vaulted 10 feet, which tied him for sixth place and earned a half-point.

The girls’ team finished 26th out of 29 competing teams with two points. Those two points came from junior Elise Robbins, who pole vaulted 8 feet for a fifth-place finish.
