A rare non-rainy Saturday was the setting for Wilton’s Summerfest on the town’s Main Street.
The event on the first full day of summer was sponsored by the Wilton Main Street Association and kicked off with a pancake breakfast hosted by the Clinton Masonic Lodge.
Music on the Park Stage by a variety of local artists provided the soundtrack for the day, which included cornhole competitions at one end of the street and a touch-a-truck experience courtesy of Wilton Fire Department at the other. In between, local farmers and craftspeople offered their art and produce. Sack races, a (plastic) duck drop from a WFD ladder truck and a pie-eating contest were also part of the festivities.
In front of the post office, Jeremy Hutchinson was handing out beanbags at the cornhole competition.
“Teams pay an entry fee, and there’s prize money, but 50% of proceeds will go to Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative for a new sound system at the school,” said Hutchinson.
Troop 613 Boy Scouts Declin Pyles and Marshall Hartshorn offered up a wading pool full of toy ducks, the bottoms of which indicated a prize the person selecting it won. Hartshorn was also drumming up support for his Eagle Scout project, which is to build 20 beds for the Sleep in Heavenly Peace organization, which provides beds and bedding for young people in need.
Chris Gordon of the Main Street restaurant The Kettle said that things were “very busy” as his crew worked to get the hot dogs and sausages into attendees’ hands. Under another tent next door, Steven St. Cyr of Galomime Farm Too in Mont Vernon was selling lots of strawberries, which he said were a bit more popular than the craft offerings he also had.
At noon, the Red Trouser Show demonstrated their indifference to gravity and open flames with an act not to be tried at home or near a gas can.
