Temple tax rate drops by over $3

The tax rate dropped by $3.14 in Temple this year. The 2019 tax rate is $22.58, down from last year’s $25.72 per $1,000 of assessed value.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Select Board signed off on the tax rate, decreasing the town tax rate portion to $5.25 from last year’s $5.91. The county portion decreased to $1.02 from last year’s $1.24, the state education portion decreased to $1.96 from last year’s $2.21, and the local education portion decreased to $14.35 from $16.36.

Temple underwent a town-wide property value re-assessment this year.

“Our net assessment is up 14 percent,” assistant to the Select Board Paul Clifton-Waite said.

He said the Budget Advisory Committee had proposed reducing the tax rate “to accommodate the growth in property assessments for the large middle section of homeowners.” The more expensive homes in Temple did not have as drastic growth in their assessments, he said.

Under the new tax rate, a person with a home valued at $200,000 can expect to pay taxes of $4,516.

Clifton-Waite said that the tax collector is working to get the bills out the door this week. He said they will be due by Saturday, Dec. 21.
