Every Sunday from 1 to 3 p.m., the Temple Forest Monastery hosts an afternoon meditation workshop open to the public, providing anyone in the community the opportunity to learn more about Buddhist culture. Hosted by Ajahn Jayanto, the workshop strives to give insight into the ancient practices of the Thai forest tradition, a Buddhist way of life that only two other temples in the entire United States practice. Techniques of conscious thinking and relaxation are discussed through two-hour lessons. After 32 years of experience as a monk, Jayanto said the workshops serve as an offering for anyone, regardless of religion.

โ€œTo me, Buddhism is a way of accessing and fulfilling the potential any human being has,โ€ said Jayanto.

Most of the members are from the Monadnock Region with a few exceptions. Monastery member Scott Feldman moved from California to Peterborough to be closer to a Buddhist temple that believes in the Thai forest traditions. Feldman said his relationships and overall well-being have drastically improved since coming to the monastery and the workshops.

โ€œItโ€™s had a huge impact psychologically and emotionally,โ€ said Feldman. โ€œI attribute that to this involvement. We live a life that to me feels sacred, mostly peaceful and it feels very supportive. Having [the monastery] to touch in with supports and stabilizes it.โ€

The secluded 250-acre property offers tranquil landscapes overlooking North Pack Monadnock. For many of the members, these workshops are more than just two hours of meditation. They are a chance to be part of a community of like-minded people focused on living fulfilling lives. In addition, these workshops are a chance for participants to escape the modern world to learn the ancient practices of relaxation and clear thinking. Feldman says his experience attending the workshops is beneficial to all aspects of his life.

โ€œItโ€™s very powerful and transformative,โ€ said Feldman. โ€œIt changes how I approach different moments of my day-to-day life.โ€

One member who has been attending the workshops since 2014 said she is grateful to have found a place that caters her simple lifestyle.

โ€œItโ€™s nourishing,โ€ said the woman, who refused to give her name. โ€œThe fact that there is a community all doing it together is very supportive. There are friendships based on a common wish to have a wholesome life.โ€
