The ConVal girls team of Julia Peters and Natasha Kipka lost 8-3 in the first round of the state doubles tournament Sunday to Ophelia Samdperil and Allison Madeira of Portsmouth High School.

“I think on any given day they could have beaten them,” said ConVal coach Gloria Morison, who watched the match from behind a chain-link fence at Southern New Hampshire University. “This is the first time they’ve played together in the tournament. I could tell they were a little nervous.”

Kipka, a junior, admitted that her “hands were shaking.”

Despite the nerves, Peters and Kipka got off to a fast start, winning the first game of the match.

“We didn’t have too much of a plan, we were just trying to keep the ball back because they are pretty good players,” Peters said.

But as the match progressed, Kipka and Peters made too many unforced errors and Samdperil and Madeira took four out of the next five games to take a commanding lead.

“I think if we were to play them again, maybe in a different area, maybe our home, it would be a lot less nerve-wracking and maybe a different game,” Kipka said.

Kipka and Peters, a sophomore, finished the season with an 8-7 record.

“We’re just going to have to see what happens next year,” Kipka said. “Maybe we’ll have Portsmouth on our schedule.”
