As the youngest Chopin Piano prize winner in history, it’s no wonder that Tony Yike Yang has been named one of Canada’s “25 Hot Musicians under 25.” Catch his performance on Sunday, March 26 at 4 p.m. in the Hancock Meeting House — and you can say you-knew-him-when!

In addition to performing extensively here and abroad with noted orchestras including the Cleveland, Ottawa Symphony, Royal Conservatory of Music’s Academy Symphony, and Warsaw National Philharmonic, this young pianist has been awarded multiple honors and prizes.

In 2014 Yang won the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Piano Competition, and in 2015 took fifth prize at the 17th International Chopin Piano Competition as a 16-year-old student, making him that competition’s youngest laureate ever. He has also performed for such notables as Canadian PM Stephen Harper, Her Royal Highness Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and Polish President Andrzej Duda.

After studying at Juilliard School of Music and The Phil and Eli Taylor Performance Academy for Young Artists at The Royal Conservatory of Music, Yang is completing a joint-degree program at Harvard University and the New England Conservatory, where he is studying with Wha Kyung Byun, who won the Presidential Gold Medal in Korea as a young performer before beginning her professional career in this country.

“Music on Norway Pond (MONP) is delighted to host this inspirational young performer who has already mesmerized audiences with his passionate artistry,” says Jody Hill Simpson, the series’ founder and artistic director. “This promises to be a great concert for all ages, including children.” On Sunday, March 26, Yang plans to perform two Scarlatti sonatas, Chopin's “Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 35,” and Mussorgsky's beloved “Pictures at an Exhibition.” All MONP concerts are one hour long.
