Residents of Greenville came one step closer to constructing a new fire station Saturday when Town Meeting voted to expand the purpose of the New Fire Station Expendable Trust Fund to include hiring architects, engineers, acquiring land and construction.

Deputy Fire Chief Charles Buttrick spoke of conditions at the current fire facility.

“The fire station is an old barn. You can’t get a modern fire truck inside it, and it needs insulation,” Buttrick said.

The article addressing the new fire station named the Board of Selectmen as agents to spend resources from the trust fund.

“If the perfect property is found, the Select Board would create a committee to acquire it,” said Town Administrator Tara Sousa. The town meeting approved this article.

A number of residents questioned a proposal for $25,000 from an unassigned fund balance being appropriated to upgrade security at Town Hall. Sousa said the panic alarm inside the offices is still working, and that the plan is to improve access control and security. The article, which was approved, will involve no funds raised by taxation.

Residents also voted to discontinue the Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade Replace Expendable Trust Fund, with the funds being transferred to the Municipalities General Fund, but did not vote to discontinue the Cemetery Land Acquisition Capital Reserve Fund.

Residents also voted to enter into another three-year agreement for police services shared with the neighboring town of Temple.
