Letter: The Heart of Democracy

Jaffrey-Rindge Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr shone a light on the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s tireless efforts to secure voting rights for African-Americans with the timely theme “Voting: The Heart of Democracy.” Many people made commemoration of this critical aspect of King’s legacy possible. We thank Nicholas Stephanopoulos of Harvard Law School for an informative keynote address about voting rights in the 21st century, Concord City Councilor Ali Sekou for sharing his journey to naturalization, gaining the right to vote and running for office and Lori Rautiola for inspiring words on King and leadership.

We are grateful to Cathedral of the Pines and Park Theatre for hosting, Jaffrey Grade School Chorus for their voices and fourth-graders for sharing “A Great Heart.” We appreciate the NH Charitable Foundation’s Putnam Foundation, Rindge Woman’s Club, Savings Bank of Walpole, M&T Bank and C&S Wholesale Grocers for funding and Market Basket, Hannaford and Dunkin’ Donuts stocking our refreshment tables.

We also thank our hospitality volunteers, Rotary Interact volunteers, Park Theatre staff and Monadnock Ledger-Transcript for coverage. The Jaffrey-Rindge MLK Committee organizes an annual remembrance of King. Volunteers are welcome. Contact mlkjaffrey@gmail.com.
