State police are still investigating to confirm the identity of the driver involved in a crash in Mason in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Police responded to the crash at the intersection of Greenville Road and Pratt Pond Road in Mason at 12:35 a.m. Tuesday, New Hampshire State Police Sgt. Jacob Wood said Thursday.

A 2018 Ford Mustang had left the road and hit a tree. When police arrived, the driver had fled the scene on foot, Wood said.

A passenger was still on the scene with minor injuries, and was evaluated by ambulance personnel on the scene, but declined to be taken to the hospital.

It also appeared the driver had some injuries, from blood found on the driver’s side airbag, Wood said, but the injuries are not believed to be serious.

Police K9 units responded to the scene to search for the driver but were unsuccessful.

The Mustang had significant front-end damage from colliding with the tree, had full airbag deployment, and had to be towed from the scene.

Later that morning, a person came to the Temple-Greenville Police Department, claiming to be the driver, Wood said. Police are currently investigating to confirm that, Wood said, and as of Thursday, there have been no charges filed.

“We haven’t confirmed 100 percent that this is the driver,” Wood said. “That is still being investigated.”

Wood said the name of the driver would not be released until that investigation is complete.

Wood said charges are expected, related to negligent or reckless behavior. Based upon the current investigation, Wood said it is being alleged there was a “distraction element taking place” when the vehicle crashed. Distracted driving can cover a variety of situations, Wood said, including cell phone use, doing something else while driving, or other “reckless acts within the car.” Wood would not confirm what the alleged distracted driving situation was in this crash.
