The Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative Budget Committee is proposing a budget of $12.6 million, which will be laid out before the voters in a budget hearing on Thursday.

Last year’s budget was about $12.3 million.

Budget Committee Chair Leslie Browne said the budget the committee is endorsing is essentially “last year’s budget, plus contract agreement increases.”

“There were some small increase and decreases, but not a large change,” she said in an interview last week.

WLC School Board Chair Harry Dailey said in an interview Monday the board will not take a vote on whether to support the Budget Committee’s number until its meeting on Wednesday. The School Board has been using a “working number” presented by the district’s SAU, which is about $163,000 more than the Budget Committee’s proposal.

“On Wednesday, we’ll take a vote on whether or not to support the Budget Committee’s number, or, if not, what number we would support,” Dailey said.

In addition to the budget, the district may be putting forth a warrant article changing how the district is funded.

Currently, the district is funded based on 50 percent average daily membership and 50 percent the town’s equalized valuation. That formula would remain the same, under the proposed change, but instead of being calculated every year, it would be based on a three-year average.

“It protects against a one-year spike,” Dailey said.

Dailey said the board began looking at the prospect of using a rolling average after Lyndeborough experienced a large spike in their portion of the payment, when Wilton’s student population dropped and Lyndeborough’s increased.

“We’re trying to avoid something like that,” Dailey said.

Dailey said the board had not yet officially decided to include a funding formula change on the warrant, and would make that decision on Wednesday.

The district also plans to request a $60,000 addition to the facilities capital reserve. The largest portion of that money will be used to continue a five-year plan to repair sections of the roof at the Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative Middle/High School. The snow date for the meeting will be Friday at the same time and place.

The Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative School District will hold its budget hearing on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative Middle/High School. Final votes on the budget will be taken at district meeting on March 9 at 9 a.m. at the Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative Middle/High School.
