Peter Weaver, the current principal for Wilton-Lyndeborough Middle/High School, will be stepping in as the district’s superintendent for the next year.

The board voted unanimously, with an abstention from Chair Alex LoVerme, who only votes to break or create ties, to install Weaver as the interim superintendent position for one year, with a recommended salary range of $120,000.

Weaver has been established in the district for a year, taking the reigns from retiring Wilton-Lyndeborough Middle/High School principal Brian Bagley in 2020.

Originally, according to School Board member Brianne Lavallee, the board advertised a permanent position, and received multiple applications which were reviewed both by a sub-committee of the School Board and members of the staff and community. Perhaps because of additional complications related to the pandemic and high demand for staff, several finalist candidates fell through, Lavallee said, but she was pleased with Weaver as a finalist put before the board.

“I’m happy with the decision we made, and look forward to moving forward in a positive manner next year,” Lavallee said. “It is always good to have someone with experience within the district. If you can promote from within, it’s always a positive.”

Weaver has had long experience in education administration as a principal and assistant principal, and has served as an interim superintendent previously, said Charlie Post, a member of the School Board who served on the Superintendent Search Committee.

Post said he didn’t have any concerns about Weaver stepping from a principal role to the superintendent.

“We’re a small district, with less than 300 students and three school buildings. He knows the district well, he knows the staff and he knows many of the students. He certainly has the credentials. We were really happy with the choice,” Post said.

Prior to his principalship at Wilton-Lyndeborough Middle/High School, Weaver served as a building principal for three years at Spaulding High School in Rochester. Prior to that, he was an assistant principal for 15 years, and had experience as a teacher for middle school special education and high school social studies.

He received two Bachelor’s degrees from Rhode Island College and a second Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania at Shippensburg, in addition to a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from the University of New Hampshire.

Post said while the board initially was searching for a permanent candidate, they offered Weaver the position on an interim basis, feeling “it would be a good step.” The board is not actively advertising for a permanent replacement in the meantime.

Weaver is scheduled to complete the school year in his current role, and take up the superintendent position in July.
