Wilton senior Mikayla Broderick collected 30 boxes of donations for the Concord Coalition to End Homelessness as part of her senior capstone project at Wilton-Lyndeborough Cooperative High School.

Seniors at WLC are required to select an essential question or issue, and in addition to a research paper, have to help put a solution in action. Broderick said she knew she wanted to center her project on community service, and chose homelessness as her issue.

She connected with volunteers at the Concord Coalition to End Homelessness, and spoke to them about what the populations they served needed the most. Hygiene products were high on the list.

The Concord Coalition has a resource center that is open five days a week at the First Congregational Church in Concord, which provides case management to assist people with accessing housing and shelter programs, Medicaid or medical benefits, food programs and veterans benefits, as well as access to daily essentials like laundry, phones and phone charging, use of computers and internet.

The Coalition also has a 40-bed winter shelter and manages transitional housing.

Broderick said when she put out the word she was collecting hygiene products at the high school and at a local TD Bank branch where her mother worked, the community did the rest. Within a week, she had collected more than two dozen boxes of donations, $290 in cash and $125 in gift cards.

Broderick said the project has helped her recontextualize homelessness for herself.

“You have this idea of the homeless shelter,” Broderick said. “But it’s just normal people, who are down on their luck and need some help.”
