No seniors? No problem. Wilton-Lyndeborough’s young upstarts have parlayed a rebuilding year into a trip to the Final Four after beating Hopkinton and Colebrook last week.

“They’ve achieved much more than anyone expected this year, including their coach,” said Denny Claire.

After sneaking past Hopkinton, 3-2, the No. 11 Warriors traveled all the way to No. 3 Colebrook on Saturday, and no one would have been surprised to see the Wilton season end in the north country. And that underdog status gave the Warriors the chip on the shoulder they needed.

“We got the point across that they nothing to lose at this point, being the big underdogs and all,” Claire said.

The Warriors got themselves into a first-inning jam but were able to escape with just one Colebrook run. After that, WLC bounced back in a big way.

“For some crazy reason, I don’t know what happened, but we just exploded and had our biggest inning of the year,” Claire said.

The Warriors put up eight runs in the second inning and put the game virtually out of reach. The two teams traded runs late but WLC kept ahead and won it 10-5.

Lexi Balam allowed just two earned runs on the mound. At the plate, two unlikely heroes provided the offense, as Emma Skelly went 4-4 with two RBI and Rachel Christino drove in another two.

Now, the Warriors travel to Plymouth State on Wednesday at 5 p.m. to take on No. 7 Derryfield. WLC lost to Derryfield twice in the regular season, 5-1 and 4-0.

“I doubt very much that we’re going to get a lot of runs against Derryfield,” Claire said, “so we’re going to have to figure out a way to stop them. If we can pull this one off, it will be unreal, but no matter what happens, I’ll be tickled pink with this season,” Claire said.

At the very least, the Warriors will get their hands on those sweet Final Four tee-shirts.
