The Wellington Road bridge in Rindge, originally planned to be replaced this summer and open prior to the start of school, is now expected to officially reopen mid-September.

The Rindge Select Board has planned an official “opening ceremony” for the bridge on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m.

When asked during the Wednesday meeting of the board whether there would be any penalties issued for the delay in construction of the bridge, which was originally anticipated to be complete prior to Sept. 1, Chair Karl Pruter said that was not something the board had discussed.

Pruter said delays had been caused by weather and delays in obtaining quality building materials.

“We believe the contractors behaved responsibly and in good faith,” Pruter said. “And we did have quite a bit of rain,” he said, jokingly, referencing New Hampshire’s historically wet July.

As of Wednesday, the first coat of pavement had been placed over the bridge roadway, with a second coat anticipated to be put on this week, and guardrails installed.

Pruter advised the bridge was still closed, and reminded residents not to attempt to cross it until the town had announced full completion of the work, to avoid damage to the new construction.
