Whittemore Lake in Bennington has opened for residents’ use without lifeguards or regular beach attendants. The town is scheduled to place buoys to mark the swimming area in the next couple of weeks, but will not be setting up the raft, according to a recent announcement. Picnic tables have also been removed.

“We’re seeing a volume we’d typically see in mid-June,” Town Administrator Kristie LaPlante said, but that it’s not being overused like other public outdoor destinations during the Stay At Home order. Visitors are asked to maintain physical distancing, make sure all trash is properly disposed, and to fill any holes dug in the sand before leaving. Masks are not required, and beach attendants will check in a couple times a week to perform light maintenance. The town will not police proper spacing between individuals and groups, according to the announcement.

The Dodge Library’s summer reading program is taking registrations, according to Director Leslie MacGregor. The program is open to all age groups and participants can pick up their library bags when the program kicks off on June 29, she said. The program features games, puzzles, and crafts to do at home while filling out reading logs. Story walks will be set up throughout town, one per week for the five week program. The first will be set up at Newhall Field, then the Bruce Edes Memorial Forest, then Sawyer Field, downtown Bennington, and finally, the library grounds. As in years past, age groups will be competing for the number of minutes read and the winner takes home a bicycle donated by the Masons. Age groups are as follows: 0-9, 10-15, and 16-100+. Register by phone at 588-6585 or email dodgelibrary1@comcast.net.
