After 18 years working in libraries across the state, Jane Nikander is Wilton Public & Gregg Free Library’s new interim director.

Nikander, 53, of Brookline, will serve as director until December at the library, located at 7 Forest Road. A 32-year resident of New Hampshire, Nikander has spent close to two decades working in schools and public libraries, including Brookline Public Library and most recently Hills Garrison Elementary School in Hudson.

Since starting the position two months ago, Nikander said the Wilton community has been supportive.

“It’s exciting because the building is wonderful,” said Nikander. “I tend to thrive with a small staff… they help me so much.”

Growing up in Leominister, Mass., Nikander said spending time in her hometown library sparked her love of books and the passion for reading and educating at a young age. More than 40 years later, Nikander said the library remains an inclusive part of her community.

“What I love most about libraries is that anybody can access the same information, despite religion, race or social status,” she said.

Before Nikander arrived in June, the library trustees were looking at candidates to take over for Patricia Fickett, who served as director for 12 years. When Fickett left, trustees Chairman Ron Brown said the hiring process has been difficult due to the director’s responsibilities.

“We were looking at a very steep learning curve with budgets and how the library works,” said Brown. “It was a big change for [Nikander].”

Despite the learning curve, Brown said Nikander is already making a positive impact in Wilton.

“We are very glad to have her here. She is already making the library her own,” said Brown.

The trustees will get together for a mid-contract review of Nikander in August.
