It’s a chaotic time to be opening a new business, but Lorelei Sullivan said she saw the chance to realize her dream, and took it.

Sullivan, owner of The Lost Siren Hair Studio, opened her doors last week on her new shop on Main Street in Wilton. She said since being introduced to cosmetology as a career field in the eighth grade at Milford Middle School, she’s never wanted to do anything else.

“It was the first time I ever learned that this thing I always wanted done, with my hair and makeup, had a name and could be a career,” she said.

Sullivan said she just loves the transformative nature of what she does, and always has.

“I really love what I do. When you have a client that sits in your chair, and you can see that they’re just defeated, and then you turn that chair around and you see them see themselves how I see them, or their husband sees them, or their kids see them, and it’s life-changing,” Sullivan said. “Even if it’s just for a few seconds. That’s something I saw when my mom would get herself ready in the morning.”

After graduating from high school, Sullivan took courses at Empire Beauty School in Hooksett, and graduated in 2007. Since then, she’s worked in salons as an employee, and worked her way up to renting a booth within a salon. The next step was opening her own store. It was one she had been contemplating for awhile, she said. When she heard about a newly renovated commercial rental space on Main Street in Wilton, she said she saw it as a sign.

“They tell you doors open for a reason,” she said. So, she took the plunge, even though she said she knows it’s a shaky time to be starting a new venture.

“In the time of COVID, I definitely have those risks, but the way I always think of it is, nobody can create a robot to do what hairdressers do. I’ve had clients come to me and end up spending more than they ever anticipated trying to fix something they tried to do at home. There is always a need for what I do.”

And, Sullivan said, the shop is small, and those looking for a one-on-one experience can come to her to find it.
