Hancock Library art exhibit takes to virtual road

Utilizing the unique benefits of virtual technology, the Hancock Town Library reached beyond its borders for March’s art exhibit, which features Sarah Patterson of Pennsylvania. Her exhibit, titled “Second Nature,” explores the place of handwriting as a method of communication, both in graphic design and in our personal narratives. And what handwriting signifies in our digital landscape.

The artwork weaves together drawing and handwriting, incorporating the practice of journaling. The idea for the work began to form after the death of her mother. Patterson read through years of letters from her, observing in a new light how those letters told a story of their relationship. She embarked on a journey to examine how handwriting connects us to the touch world.

“In the midst of a research project on the subject of handwriting, it was important for me to write by hand every day. By combining my renewed interest in drawing and writing by hand, I began this series: Second Nature,” Patterson said.

Patterson is an artist and a maker. Her favorite media include collage, drawing, and myriad analog methods of mark making, and her work features themes of the natural world, mother/daughterhood, archiving, memory, and handwriting. She received undergraduate degrees in elementary education from the University of Maine and in graphic design from Pennsylvania College of Technology. She received her MFA in graphic design from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Sarah works as a graphic designer/project coordinator at Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport.

Complementing the virtual exhibit, the library will have a journaling station, where patrons can write entries in a blank journal. Also, journal prompt cards will be provided for starting your own journal at home.
