Award-winning Boston playwright Jack Neary’s play “First Night” will be presented as a reading at the River Street Theatre in Jaffrey on Saturday at 2 p.m. Admission is free.

Neary is an accomplished playwright. His play Auld Lang Syne was performed at the Peterborough Players in 2012 and starred Kathy Manfre and Gordon Clapp.

Manfre and Clapp also appeared in Neary’s Trick or Treat play at the Northern Stage in White River Junction, VT. They will perform Trick or Treat again in New York City next January.

“First Night” is set during New Year’s Eve, 1985. Danny Fleming, mid-thirties, is about to close up his video store for the evening when into the store pops a woman he believes he remembers from grammar school. What he remembers most is that this woman went away to be a nun. Why is she there? Why does he care? As the story unfolds, we find out the answers to these and many other questions.

This reading of “First Night” stars John Manning and Jocelyn Duford. Author Jack Neary will be in attendance at the reading and will conduct a talkback with the audience after the performance.

“We are proud to present this reading of Jack’s ‘First Night.’ It has humor, charm, soul, and heart. We hope to present more readings at the RST in the coming months. Readings of new and existing plays will be a regular staple of the new Park Theatre performing arts center when it opens,” said Steve Jackson, CEO, Managing Director of The Park Theatre.

It is strongly recommended for those interested in attending First Night to obtain free tickets in advance of the reading. Tickets can be found online at RiverSt.org or by calling the RST Box Office (603) 532-8888. The after-hours box office can be reached by calling OvationTix at (866) 811-4111.

The River Street Theatre is located in downtown Jaffrey, New Hampshire at 6 River Street.
