Redfern Arts Center kicks off new season next week

The Redfern Arts Center at Keene State College opens its 37th performance season Sept. 13 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. with its annual celebratory Season Kick Off Party.

This year, the Season Kick Off Party will take place on the Redfern’s Main Theatre stage. The change in location invites guests to get a “behind the scenes” look at the Redfern, and a special tour of the Main Theatre will be offered as part of the event. The Kick Off Party features an array of delicious appetizers, desserts and refreshments and is a fun, social gathering that is free and open to the campus and community, no reservations are required. The Kick Off party festivities includes examples of the performing and visual arts programs at Keene State, highlights of the upcoming performance season, pop-up performances and art installations in and around the theatre. Partygoers can enjoy special performances from the KSC Music Department and Theatre and Dance Departments and student ensembles. To highlight the Redfern’s Presenting Series, Keene State College alumnus and award-winning Boston dance and fiber artist Alexander Davis ‘14 will share a solo dance piece as a preview of the work to be performed this spring on March 28, 2019.

Guests can purchase Redfern memberships during the Kickoff Party. Anyone who becomes a Redfern Circle member during the Kickoff Party will receive a Redfern mug in addition to a Redfern canvas tote bag. The Redfern’s many levels of membership offer patrons ticket discounts to Redfern events, preferred seating, and invitations to special events. The Redfern also offers a $10 student membership option, which is a great way for students to attend performances together.​​​​​​​

Redfern’s 2018-19 season runs from September to April 2019. The complete 2018-19 performance season encompasses nine diverse performances and is packed with free and ticketed events, artist residencies, lobby exhibits, workshops, class visits, receptions and post-show discussions. The Redfern’s 37th season features: award-winning Boston Ballet choreographer Yury Yanowsky and internationally acclaimed Boston Ballet stars performing as Dance YaNOWsky on Sept. 22; hilarious sketch comedy group the Upright Citizens Brigade Touring Company on Sept. 28; and VickiKristinaBarcelona, a power trio dedicated to re-imagining the songs of Tom Waits, performing an evening concert on Oct. 5. The season also includes the extraordinary Bindlestiff Family Cirkus performing their Cardboard and Duct Tape Spectacular in the spring – a delight for all ages; The Telling Project, a national storytelling event highlighting and deepening the civilian understanding of veterans’ experiences; Castle of Our Skins, a Boston-based chamber ensemble exploring Black artistry through music; and the acclaimed U.S. Army Field Band and Soldiers’ Chorus. Continuing its mission to present and foster dynamic and multifaceted arts experiences, the Redfern has programmed a range of exciting opportunities to appeal to and engage varied audiences across campus and the greater Monadnock Region.

The Redfern’s Creative Connections program provides free engagement activities and points of entry into our performance season and generates opportunities for audiences to dig deeper into art, artists, and the creative process. Creative Connections highlights for the 2018-19 season include: circus and dance workshops, a fiber art exhibit with local artists, a music residency with Boston ensemble Castle of Our Skins, a listening party with VickiKristinaBarcelona exploring the music of Tom Waits, and an Improv workshop offered by UCBTC on Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. in the Main Theatre, open to campus and community members to participate.
