As part of the community phase of the Peterborough Town Library’s capital campaign, a targeted crowd-funding appeal will take place from Sept. 12 through Oct 15. Called “Cast of Thousands,” the appeal goal is to raise $100,000 which will support Public Technology Access in the new library. Donors who give $1,000 or more to the “Cast of Thousands” will have their names displayed in that area of the new library.

“There are many people in our community who don’t have access to the internet at home,” says Corinne Chronopoulos, Library Director. “They don’t own printers or iPhones, and they rely on the library for access to technology. Technology will be a key service in the new building, we are looking forward to the vastly improved IT infrastructure.”

A leading priority of the new library is to broaden technical literacy services. The number of public computers will be increased and include areas for teens and families. The technology classroom will allow staff to expand technology classes both in size and offerings.

The plan also calls for a separate children’s area to provide much needed space for families to engage with their children’s learning. The children’s library will include space for learning activities, technology and computers, and a makerspace featuring maker activities and 3D printing.

This landmark project and design has undergone a conservative cost estimating process with Bedford-based Harvey Construction management team, and the Library’s Board of Trustees have approved a total project cost of $8.5 million. In May 2018 a $3 million bond was passed by the residents of Peterborough, and the volunteer-driven Peterborough Town Library Campaign Committee, chaired by Peterborough resident Audrey White, has raised $4.3 million privately in gifts and pledges towards the final goal. The committee anticipates raising an additional $1.2 million from individuals, corporations, foundations, and state agencies.

Leading the project is the library’s 1833 Society, which was formed by a group of concerned citizens and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit with a two-fold mission: to raise sufficient funds to finance a major upgrade of the library; and to assist with the design and construction of a revitalized and updated facility.

Contributions to the “Cast of Thousands” may be sent or delivered to PTL Campaign, 2 Concord Street, Peterborough, NH 03458. Checks should be made out to Peterborough Library Campaign. Donors will be contacted regarding naming instructions.
