The Peterborough Town Library team announced plans for a Grand Reopening Celebration on Sunday, Sept.12 at the newly renovated library located at 2 Concord St. in Peterborough.

The public is invited for self-tours of the building between 2 and 4 p.m. All rooms will be open, including the five new meeting rooms, beautiful restored historical reading room, large new collection spaces, administrative offices, the Elizabeth Room (youth space), and the light-filled young adult area. A scavenger hunt will help self-guide visitors and will offer fun PTL themed prizes. PTL staff will be on-hand in each of the new five meeting rooms to demonstrate meeting technology and answer questions. Visitors may stop by the help-desk for a library card and meet and greet with library volunteers and Trustees. Musicians from Monadnock Music will perform two pieces in the 1833 Room at 2 and 3 p.m.

“We cannot wait to show off the new library,” said Library Director Corinne Chronopoulos. “It’s been an incredible project made possible by volunteers, donors, and the community’s support. We have been lucky to have had minimal supply chain impacts to our construction timeline; however, we are still waiting for the arrival of our new steel shelving. The staff is going to be creative and ask for the public’s patience while we wait for final plans to relocate our collection of over 30,000 books.”

Small tours will be available during the week of Sept. 13-17 at 11 a.m. for those who wish to avoid crowds. Register by visiting the library event page. On Sept. 17, an art opening will be held for Erin Sweeney, from 5 to 7 p.m. Sweeney is the creator of the Art Table Project, which gave out hundreds of free art kits during the pandemic. Sweeney’s exhibit will feature her independent art, including book sculpture and an interactive component.

During the celebration, the library parking lot is reserved for those with mobility issues who cannot walk long distances. Parking for visitors is located at All Saints and Union Congregational Church parking lots located on Concord Street. Parking is available in downtown Peterborough – on-street at the Riverwalk parking lot and at the fire station

Visitors are kindly requested to wear masks during the open house and follow signage for entry and exit to assist with social distancing. Other safety protocols will include refreshments offered to-go and time entry to limit crowds, if necessary. The building also has a UVC system throughout to maintain a clean air supply.

The library has new hours in order to offer additional evening availability and the capability to staff two floors. Hours will be Monday and Tuesday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Thursday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The final delivery of library shelving has not been confirmed at this time. National steel shortages and supply chain issues delayed the production of the new steel shelving much further than expected. The PTL team asks the public to stay tuned to the library website for the latest updates on how to access the library collection. The team will make every possible effort to open the library for business on Sept. 13 at 10 a.m.
